To celebrate Heritage Week (15th - 23rd August) we are launching a series of Leitrim Heritage themed videos on Youtube and a Podcast series under the banner of 'Connecting Through Heritage'.
Both the podcast series and the youtube series explore the cultural, built and natural heritage of Leitrim. Please see the links below to access them. I hope you enjoy.
Leitrim Heritage Youtube Series
Our Connecting Through Heritage Youtube series is kicked off by Ricky Whelan and Annie Birtwhistle exploring the lifestyle of the iconic swift, and why they choose to spend part of their year nesting in towns and villages across the county. Sean Meehan talks us through the different species of bats in the area and what this means for the environment. With a focus on the land, Dr Robert Meehan explores the geological heritage of our county with Dr Kieran O'Conor stepping further back into the past to talk about the archaeology of Leitrim's Medieval Settlement. Tommy Earley brings us back to the future by explaining the nuances of organic farming on the shore of Lough Allen. And the quirky tradition of Mummers and Wrens gets a good dusting down with Edwina Guckian. Access videos here.
Leitrim Heritage Podcast
Our podcast series highlights much of Leitrim's natural, built and cultural heritage from the people who know most about it. We'll hear stories about potato planting and traditional farming methods; an overview of ecology and conservation; discussion on what sets Leitrim's singing and fiddle music apart from other counties and take the chat right back to Leitrim's prehistoric archaeology - all from a range of experts and local people passionate about heritage. Access podcast here or search for Connecting Through Heritage on your preferred podcast provider.
Thank you to all the heritage experts who took part in both the podcast and video series.
'Connecting Through Heritage' is a Leitrim County Council Heritage Project which is funded by the Heritage Council.
You can also explore other Heritage Week projects submitted by individuals and organizations across Leitrim here.
